An opera can vary extensively from production to production. Different singers, conductors, directors and designers bring unique vision and interpretation to their craft. Look closely at details of specific arias and scenes from operas by Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini and many more.

Then, journey through three video performance clips of each aria (or scene) to compare and contrast different singers, to see different productions, to experience different interpretations. This opera series offers a wonderful variety of popular arias as well gorgeous lesser-known gems. Artists and Arias is a terrific course for both the opera newcomer and the long-time fan.

Presenter James Sokol returns to A Passion for Opera at SRJC to lead another delightful opera appreciation series. James has worked in the opera world for the past two decades, having begun his career under Beverly Sills at the New York City Opera.

He is a Founding Member and is on the Artistic Advisory Board of The Singers Development Foundation, an organization which offers study grants to promising young opera singers. He has worked and lectured for several years for San Francisco Opera and is a former Executive Director of San Francisco's Pocket Opera. He teaches opera appreciation courses throughout the Bay Area.
